In short: The lotus position, or Padmasana, is a cornerstone of Eastern meditation, representing spiritual growth and enlightenment. While it remains a powerful cultural symbol of well-being, the pose demands extreme hip flexibility. For the uninitiated, forcing the body into this ancient posture can cause significant, long-lasting damage to the knees.

The name Padmasana derives from the Sanskrit words for lotus and seat. In Asian traditions, the sacred lotus serves as a metaphor for the journey toward perfection: rooted in the mud of a pond, it rises above the water to bloom. This symbolism is deeply embedded in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain iconography, where figures like Shiva, Gautama Buddha, and the Tirthankaras are frequently depicted in the pose. By the 8th century, the posture was formally described in texts like the Patanjalayogashastravivarana, and it appears on coins of Chandragupta II, who reigned between approximately 380 and 415 CE.

Physically, the pose requires approximately 115 degrees of outward hip rotation. Because many modern practitioners lack this range of motion, they often compensate by bending the knee joint sideways. This creates a high risk of injury to the medial meniscus cartilage, which is notoriously slow to heal. While yoga guru B. K. S. Iyengar acknowledged that beginners may experience excruciating pain, he argued that the discomfort subsides with practice, eventually allowing for a state of restful alertness ideal for breath control. However, claims regarding the pose's ability to tone specific organs or improve circulation remain unsupported by clinical evidence.

Beyond its spiritual roots, the lotus position has been transformed into a global marketing tool. In 2008, scholar Thomas Tweed noted that the image of the solitary meditator has become the defining representation of Buddhist practice. This aesthetic has been co-opted by Western advertisers to sell everything from vitamins and fitness clubs to cars and beer. By associating the lotus position with healthy living, brands—such as Poland's Obory Dairy, which marketed its 'Jogi' yogurt using images of meditation—leverage the pose's aura of exclusivity and well-being to influence consumer behavior, far removed from its origins as a tool for attaining liberation.
