Maitrī is the ancient practice of radiating benevolence to conquer fear and hatred
In short: Maitrī, or mettā, is a Sanskrit term for loving-kindness that transcends any single tradition. Far from a simple feeling, it is a disciplined meditative practice of radiating goodwill toward all beings. By systematically expanding this intention, practitioners aim to dissolve ill-will and cultivate a mind of profound, immeasurable peace.
The concept of maitrī—derived from the Sanskrit word for friend—is a foundational virtue in Indian thought, appearing across Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu texts. While often associated with Buddhism as the first of the four sublime states, or Brahmaviharas, scholars like Ian Harris note that these practices did not originate solely within the Buddhist tradition. Early Upanishads and Jain Sutras also emphasize these virtues, suggesting a shared heritage among ancient Indian sages. This practice functions as a deliberate counter to negative mental states, specifically serving as a potent antidote to fear, anger, and ill-will.
Meditation on maitrī involves a structured progression of focus. Practitioners typically begin by directing kindness toward themselves, then move outward to loved ones, neutral parties, and eventually difficult individuals, before extending this wish for happiness to all sentient beings. This is not merely a passive sentiment; it is an active, intentional cultivation. The practice is often categorized by specific pervasions, including directional radiating—sending benevolence to the east, west, north, south, and intermediate directions, as well as upward and downward—to ensure no corner of the world is left untouched by this mental state.
The tradition warns of two distinct obstacles: the 'far enemy' of hatred and the 'near enemy' of attachment. While hatred is an obvious opposition, attachment is more insidious, as it superficially mimics kindness but is rooted in greed. When fully developed, the Pali Canon suggests that this 'liberation of the heart' is so powerful that it surpasses other forms of merit-making. It is described as a bright, brilliant state of mind that, when mastered, leaves no room for hostility to persist, ultimately serving as a path toward profound inner liberation.
