How South Central Los Angeles architecture found a home on a New York roof
In short: Artist Lauren Halsey brings the spirit of her Los Angeles neighborhood to The Met. This video explores the creation of her 2023 rooftop installation, a structure designed for visitors to inhabit while reflecting on the intersection of ancient history and modern urban expression.
Born in 1987, Lauren Halsey drew from the collective energy of her South Central Los Angeles community to build a full-scale architectural piece for The Met. The installation, which she describes as a prototype for hieroglyphic architecture, functions as a physical space for public interaction.
The work bridges disparate influences, ranging from ancient Egyptian symbolism to 1960s utopian design and contemporary street tagging. By incorporating these visual languages, Halsey explores how individuals claim public space as their own. The exhibition was open to the public from April 18 to October 22, 2023.
