How childhood scribbles became a massive sculptural installation at The Met

Meet the Artist—Petrit Halilaj: The Roof Garden Commission, Abetare | Met Exhibitions · 10:20 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: Artist Petrit Halilaj discusses his 2024 Roof Garden Commission, Abetare. This video offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the Kosovar artist transformed The Met's rooftop with a sprawling installation inspired by the universal themes found in children's drawings and his own history as a refugee.

Petrit Halilaj, born in 1986 in Kostërc, former Yugoslavia, created Abetare as his first major United States project. The installation draws from his personal experiences as a war refugee and the cultural tensions within Kosovo. By focusing on the drawings of children, the work bridges personal history with universal human emotions like hope and fear.

The project involved extensive research across the Balkans and a large team of collaborators, including engineers and production managers, to realize the complex sculptural forms. Halilaj, who studied at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, has been based in Berlin since 2008.
