Why this festive marine worm is a secret guardian of coral reefs

Meet the Marvelous Christmas Tree Worm · 5:21 · Video: NOVA PBS Official · Watch at the source

In short: The Christmas tree worm is a marine relative of the earthworm that thrives in coral reefs. This video explores how these colorful creatures differ from their soil-dwelling cousins and why they may play a vital role in protecting the delicate ecosystems they call home.

While they share a distant lineage with common earthworms, Christmas tree worms are far more long-lived and specialized. These marine animals inhabit coral reefs, where their presence may help prevent the destruction of the reef structure itself.

Unlike the typical six to nine-year lifespan of a garden nightcrawler, these worms generally live between 10 and 20 years. In environments with minimal pollution, they can even reach 40 years of age.
