How a Mozambican biologist is reinventing the Portuguese language through magical realism
In short: Mia Couto does not just write novels; he reconstructs language. By infusing Portuguese with Mozambican vocabulary and structures, he has created a distinct African narrative style. A biologist by trade, Couto blends scientific precision with the surreal, earning him international acclaim as one of the most significant voices in modern literature.
Born in Beira, Mozambique, in 1955, Mia Couto’s trajectory was shaped by the country's turbulent transition to independence. After the 1974 Carnation Revolution, he stepped away from his medical studies to work as a journalist and director for the Mozambique Information Agency. It was not until 1985 that he resigned from his newspaper career to complete his formal training in biology, a field in which he remains professionally active today at the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.
Couto’s literary reputation rests on his ability to bend the Portuguese language. Influenced by the magical realism of Latin American writers and the stylistic nuances of Brazilian authors like Jorge Amado and João Guimarães Rosa, he crafts a unique prose. His work is peppered with original proverbs—often called 'improverbs'—alongside riddles and legends that give his fiction a deeply poetic, almost mythical dimension. His debut novel, 'Sleepwalking Land', was famously recognized by an international jury as one of the 12 best African books of the 20th century.
His influence extends far beyond Mozambique, with his works translated into numerous languages across more than 20 countries. In 1998, he became the first African writer elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters. His shelf of accolades is extensive, including the 2013 Camões Prize, the 2014 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, and the 2025 PEN/Nabokov Award. Whether through his 'Sands of the Emperor' trilogy or his short story collections, Couto continues to bridge the gap between scientific observation and the enchantment of storytelling.
