Why the final Naked Gun film took its title from a vinyl record
In short: The 1994 comedy Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult concluded a legendary slapstick trilogy. Its peculiar numerical subtitle refers to the rotational speed of phonograph records, signaling the end of an era for the franchise before its eventual 2025 reboot. Behind the scenes, the production faced unique legal and creative hurdles.
Released in 1994, the third installment of the series marked a transition in leadership. Peter Segal directed the film, making it the only entry not helmed by David Zucker, who instead served as a producer and co-writer. The plot follows the retired Lieutenant Frank Drebin, played by Leslie Nielsen, as he goes undercover in prison to thwart a terrorist bombing at the Academy Awards. The film features a notable parody of the 1987 movie The Untouchables, which itself pays homage to a 1925 silent film by Sergei Eisenstein.
The production encountered significant legal friction over its marketing. A promotional poster featured Leslie Nielsen mimicking a famous 1991 Vanity Fair cover photograph of a pregnant Demi Moore, captured by Annie Leibovitz. Paramount faced a copyright infringement lawsuit from Leibovitz, but the Second Circuit court ultimately ruled that the image was protected as a parody under fair use. Despite mixed critical reception, the film achieved a worldwide gross of $132 million, though it remains the lowest-earning entry in the series.
The film's legacy is marked by both its cast and its failed successors. It served as the final feature film appearance for O.J. Simpson before his arrest on murder charges. While it was intended to be the series finale, various attempts to revive the franchise followed, including a canceled 2009 project written by Alan Spencer that would have featured Leslie Nielsen mentoring a new generation of officers. The franchise eventually returned in 2025 with a reboot starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr.
