In short: Before becoming a Hollywood staple, Paul Bettany was a teenage street performer playing guitar in London. After a personal tragedy, he dropped out of school and lived in a small flat, eventually finding his way to the Drama Centre London and a career spanning blockbuster franchises and acclaimed stage productions.

Bettany's journey to stardom was marked by significant personal upheaval. At age 16, his brother Matthew died after falling from a tennis pavilion roof at Queenswood School. This tragedy led Bettany to leave home and school, turning to life as a London busker to earn money playing guitar. After a period working in a home for the elderly, he enrolled at the Drama Centre London in 1990.

His professional rise was fueled by persistence and unexpected connections. While director Brian Helgeland was originally planning a film called The Sin Eater, he was so impressed by Bettany's audition tape that he eventually wrote the role of Chaucer specifically for him in the production A Knight's Tale. This success opened doors to major Hollywood roles, including A Beautiful Mind and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bettany's contribution was transformative. He initially provided the voice for the AI J.A.R.V.I.S., a role he performed for seven years across films like Iron Man and The Avengers. By 2015, he transitioned from voice work to an onscreen presence as Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, a character he would continue to portray in subsequent films and the Disney+ series WandaVision.

Beyond the screen, Bettany has demonstrated versatility on stage and behind the camera. He has performed in the West End and on Broadway, notably playing Andy Warhol in The Collaboration. He also made his directorial debut in 2014 with the film Shelter, which he also wrote and co-produced.
