Energy is not held within an object, but within the space between them

In short: We often think of a battery or a raised ball as 'containing' energy. But physics reveals a deeper truth: potential energy is a property of the entire system, existing only because of the relative positions of interacting parts.

To understand potential energy, one must move away from the idea of an individual body possessing energy in isolation. Instead, it is a property of a system. For instance, a steel ball raised above the ground does not hold energy by itself; rather, the system composed of the Earth and the ball possesses gravitational potential energy. This energy increases as the distance between the two objects grows, provided they attract one another gravitationally.

The mechanism relies on the configuration of the parts. In any system where components exert forces on each other—such as electric or gravitational forces—the energy stored depends on their relative positions. This includes elastic energy in a compressed spring or the electrical potential energy stored between the plates of a charged capacitor. Even chemical and nuclear energies are fundamentally rooted in these particle-level interactions, arising from the mutual forces between atoms and molecules.

Crucially, the value of this energy is path-independent and relative. The energy of a system depends only on its initial and final configurations, regardless of the route taken to get there. This also means the value is arbitrary; it depends entirely on the chosen reference point. In a system where a ball is raised 10 feet, the potential energy would double if the starting point were the bottom of a 10-foot-deep hole. In bound systems like atoms, physicists often set the zero point at a distance so great that electric forces become undetectable, meaning bound electrons actually possess negative potential energy.
