How Nicolas Poussin transformed the landscape into a poetic vision of time

Poussin and Nature: Arcadian Visions - Curatorial Talk - Part 3 of 3 · 7:37 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: Explore the influential landscapes of Nicolas Poussin, an artist whose structured visions of nature inspired masters from Constable to Cézanne. This talk examines how he viewed the natural world through the lens of time and transformation.

This exhibition investigates the diverse landscape works of French master Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665). The collection spans his early, lyrical pastorals influenced by Venetian styles to his later, more austere compositions that meditate on the cycles of nature, including its transformations and renewals.

By bringing together approximately forty paintings and an equal number of drawings—some executed en plein air—the presentation reveals why Poussin's approach to the natural world left such a lasting mark on Western art history.
