Energy is not just movement; it is also what is stored

In short: We often think of energy as motion, but some of the most powerful forces are invisible and stationary. From the tension in a compressed spring to the atoms within a chemical bond, potential energy represents a hidden capacity to do work.

Potential energy is not a property of a single object, but rather a characteristic of an entire system. For instance, in a system consisting of the Earth and a raised steel ball, the potential energy depends on the distance separating the two. As the ball is raised, the work performed to move it transfers additional energy into the system, storing it as gravitational potential energy.

This stored energy manifests in several distinct forms based on the configuration of the system's parts. A compressed or stretched spring holds potential energy due to its shape. On a microscopic scale, chemical energy—the ability of a substance to produce heat or work through composition changes—is actually potential energy arising from the forces between molecules and atoms. Similarly, nuclear energy and the electrical charge held between capacitor plates represent different types of potential energy.

The calculation of this energy is highly dependent on your perspective. The value is arbitrary because it relies on a chosen reference point; for example, a ball at 10 feet above the ground would have double the potential energy if the starting reference point were the bottom of a 10-foot-deep hole. Furthermore, the energy depends only on the initial and final positions of the parts, meaning the specific path taken to move them does not change the final energy state. In bound systems like atoms, this can even result in negative potential energy values.
