In short: Prometheus explores humanity's search for its creators, the Engineers, who seeded life on Earth. This science fiction epic, set in the late 21st century, follows a crew seeking answers about mortality and belief, only to discover a biological threat that challenges their understanding of our place in the universe.

Directed by Ridley Scott, the 2012 film Prometheus serves as a thematic expansion of the Alien universe rather than a direct prequel. The story follows archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway, who discover a star map in 2089 that leads them to the moon LV-223. Funded by Peter Weyland, the expedition seeks the Engineers—a superior race believed to be humanity's forerunners—in hopes of uncovering the secrets of immortality and the purpose of existence.

The film’s narrative is heavily influenced by Milton’s Paradise Lost and various creation myths. It posits that the Engineers created humanity, only to later attempt to destroy their creation with a virulent biological weapon. This cycle of creation and destruction extends to the crew's own creation of the android David, who serves as a non-human perspective on the humans' search for their makers. The film intentionally leaves many connections ambiguous, forcing the audience to grapple with the same existential questions as the characters.

Production was a massive undertaking, with a budget estimated between $120 million and $130 million. The film utilized practical sets and 3D cameras to create its distinct visual language, which references works ranging from Kubrick’s 2001 to the art of William Blake. While the film grossed over $403 million worldwide, it remains a subject of debate regarding the intersection of faith and science. Shaw, a devout believer, finds her faith tested rather than broken when she learns that humanity was engineered, ultimately choosing to continue her search for the Engineers' home world to confront the truth of her origins.

The project evolved significantly from its origins as a direct Alien prequel. After writer Jon Spaihts developed a script connecting the film to the Alien saga, Damon Lindelof was brought in to rewrite the story, shifting the focus toward a broader, more provocative mythology. By the time of its release in June 2012, the film had established itself as a standalone exploration of hubris, divinity, and the consequences of humanity’s desire to stand alongside its makers.
