In short: Pyrrhonism is an ancient school of skepticism that rejects all dogma to achieve ataraxia—a state of profound, untroubled tranquility. By balancing every argument against its equal opposite, practitioners suspend judgment on all non-evident matters, finding that mental rest is the ultimate antidote to the anxiety of holding firm beliefs.

Founded in the first century BCE by Aenesidemus, Pyrrhonism traces its roots to the fourth-century BCE philosopher Pyrrho of Elis. While the historical Pyrrho’s own teachings remain shrouded in mystery due to lost texts and contradictory accounts, the school flourished as a distinct alternative to the dogmatic philosophies of the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Unlike Academic skeptics, who claimed that knowledge itself is impossible, Pyrrhonists refused to even assert that nothing can be known, maintaining a radical suspension of judgment.

The core of the Pyrrhonist practice involves the use of 'tropes'—systematic arguments designed to induce a state of aporia, or intellectual impasse. Aenesidemus introduced ten modes highlighting the fallibility of perception, such as the relativity of sensory data and the influence of custom. Later, Agrippa refined these into five even more abstract tropes: dissent, infinite regress, relation, assumption, and circularity. These tools demonstrate that every claim to truth either rests on an unproven hypothesis, leads to an infinite chain of justification, or relies on circular reasoning.

Despite this pervasive skepticism, Pyrrhonists did not live in a vacuum. They navigated daily life by following appearances, guided by nature, physical compulsions like hunger, and established social laws. By refusing to commit to the truth or falsity of underlying realities, they sought to avoid the mental turmoil that comes with rigid conviction. As Victor Brochard noted, the five tropes of Agrippa remain a remarkably precise and potentially irresistible formulation of skepticism, continuing to challenge the foundations of human belief long after the school’s peak in the early Roman era.
