In short: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala was a literary chameleon who fled Nazi Germany, found fame in India, and became the backbone of the legendary Merchant Ivory film empire. As the only individual to claim both a Booker Prize and an Oscar, her life was defined by a restless, outsider perspective on the world.

Born in Cologne in 1927, Jhabvala’s early life was marked by the trauma of the Nazi regime. Her family fled to Britain in 1939, where she endured the London Blitz and later grappled with the suicide of her father, who discovered that 40 of their relatives had perished in the Holocaust. This profound displacement shaped her identity as a rootless intellectual, a theme that would permeate her later writing.

In 1951, she married an Indian architect and moved to New Delhi, where she began chronicling the social mores of India’s Westernizing middle class. Though she lived there for decades, she remained deeply ambivalent, famously describing the country as an intolerable experience for a Central European with a tendency toward constant self-analysis. Her perceptive, often detached portrayals of Indian life initially led many readers to assume she was Indian herself, a misconception that later fueled criticism regarding her perceived colonial attitudes.

Her career took a transformative turn when she partnered with James Ivory and Ismail Merchant. Though she once tried to avoid them by pretending to be a housemaid during their first visit, she became the essential screenwriter for their productions. Her work on films like A Room with a View and Howards End earned her two Academy Awards, while her novel Heat and Dust secured the Booker Prize in 1975. She eventually settled in New York, continuing to write until her death in 2013, leaving behind a legacy as an initiated outsider who masterfully navigated the complexities of multiple cultures.
