The blue heart of our planet is under rapid decline

TED Prize wish: Protect our oceans - Sylvia Earle · 18:12 · Video: TED-Ed · Watch at the source

In short: For over fifty years, Sylvia Earle has explored the ocean's deepest frontiers to build the science of marine health. Now, she uses her platform to issue a global plea: we must stop taking our oceans for granted before their rapid decline becomes irreversible.

Sylvia Earle is a legendary oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer who has dedicated more than half a century to ocean exploration and advocacy. Her career is defined by a commitment to understanding the 'blue heart' of the planet, leading more than 50 undersea expeditions and clocking over 7,000 hours underwater. Her work highlights a critical tension: while the ocean is vital to life, it is currently facing a rapid decline due to human neglect. She has spent decades building the scientific evidence for why healthy oceans are essential. Her work serves as a warning about the shocking statistics of marine decay.

Earle's expertise is rooted in pioneering exploration. In 1970, she captained the first all-female team to live underwater. By 1979, she achieved a milestone by walking untethered on the sea floor at a depth previously unreachable by any woman. She also set several solo dive records during her career. These milestones helped push the boundaries of what humans can endure in deep-sea environments.

Her technical contributions include co-founding Deep Ocean Engineering and Deep Ocean Technologies in the 1980s to develop vehicles capable of reaching inaccessible depths. During the 1990s' beginning, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration appointed her as its Chief Scientist. In 2009, Earle was awarded the million-dollar TED Prize to continue her mission of ocean protection. Today, she leads Mission Blue, an organization focused on establishing marine protected areas worldwide. Her advocacy serves as a call to action, urging the global community to transition from passive observation to active preservation of marine ecosystems and the creatures that inhabit them. She holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from Florida State University. Additionally, she earned a Doctorate of Psychology from Duke University.
