Can we protect the ocean before it is too late for marine life?
In short: Marine biologist Sylvia Earle returns to the TED stage to evaluate the progress of her 2009 initiative to create a global network of protected Hope Spots. She highlights successful conservation efforts and argues that the path to restoring ocean health is clear, provided we find the collective will to act.
In 2009, Sylvia Earle proposed a global system of Hope Spots to safeguard the ocean. By April 17, 2026, when she spoke at TED2026, the urgency of the mission had grown, yet significant progress had been achieved. Success stories include the recovery of 100,000 fur seals from the brink of extinction and the manual restoration of coral reefs, which are being rebuilt one clam at a time.
Earle contends that the scientific knowledge required to reverse damage to marine ecosystems already exists. The primary challenge is no longer a lack of information, but the necessity of summoning the global political and social resolve to implement these known solutions.
