The blue heart of our planet is facing a rapid decline

Sylvia Earle: My wish: Protect our oceans · 17:48 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: For over fifty years, oceanographer Sylvia Earle has explored the deep to uncover the mysteries of our seas. Her message is urgent: we are taking our oceans for granted. To save this vital life-support system, she calls for a global commitment to protection before the damage becomes irreversible.

Sylvia Earle is a legendary oceanographer and explorer who has spent more than half a century dedicated to marine conservation. She gained fame by leading an initial all-female underwater residency during 1970. In 1979, she achieved a historic milestone by walking untethered on the sea floor at a depth previously reached by no other woman. These expeditions were made possible by her work in the 1980s, where she co-founded Deep Ocean Engineering and Deep Ocean Technologies to design vehicles capable of reaching inaccessible depths.

Earle's expertise is backed by a diverse academic background, including a Doctorate of Psychology from Duke University and a Master of Science from Florida State University. During the 1990s' beginning, she held the position of Chief Scientist for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. Today, she leads Mission Blue, an organization focused on establishing marine protected areas worldwide. Her advocacy reached a major milestone in 2009 when she was awarded the million-dollar TED Prize to continue her mission.

The core of Earle's plea is a warning against human complacency. She highlights shocking statistics regarding the rapid decline of ocean health, framing the sea as the 'vital blue heart' of the planet. By sharing astonishing imagery of marine environments, she aims to shift public perception from indifference to active protection. Her goal is to move beyond observation toward a collective effort to safeguard the oceanic systems that sustain life on Earth.
