The complex emotional origins of Edgar Allan Poe's marriage
In short: Explore the history behind Poe's marriage to his cousin, Virginia Clemm. This video examines the deep family ties and psychological theories regarding his devotion to her, starting from their first meeting as children.
Edgar Allan Poe met Virginia Clemm when she was only 7 years old and he was 20, shortly after the death of his mother in 1829. The two were cousins; Poe's father, David Poe, and Virginia's mother, Maria Clemm, were siblings. Poe even lived briefly in the Clemm household before attending West Point.
Because of the proximity to his mother's passing, some literary scholars suggest a psychological transfer of affection. They propose that Poe may have redirected his feelings for his deceased mother toward his Aunt Maria, and eventually toward Virginia.
