Why the Soviet Union built the most powerful explosive ever made

The Biggest Nuclear Bomb in History · 6:09 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: The Tsar Bomba, nicknamed 'Big Ivan,' remains the most powerful man-made explosive in history. This video explores the motivations behind its creation and the extreme risks taken during its testing.

Rather than a practical weapon for regular warfare, the Tsar Bomba was primarily a demonstration of Soviet military ingenuity and power. The device was so massive that it was nearly impossible to deploy effectively against the United as the Soviets intended.

The scale of the explosion was so immense that even after engineers reduced the bomb's total yield by half, the mission remained incredibly perilous. During the test, the crew of the dropping plane remained at an altitude of 10 km (about six miles) and 45 km (28 miles) away from the detonation point, which occurred at an elevation of approximately 4 km (2.5 miles). Despite these distances, the estimated survival rate for the pilot and crew was only 50%.
