The only planet in our solar system whose name avoids mythology

In short: While every other planet in our solar system is named after Greco-Roman gods, Earth is an outlier. Its name is a simple Germanic word meaning 'the ground.' Beyond its unique name, Earth is the only known place in the universe that harbors life, thanks to its liquid water.

Positioned third from the Sun, Earth ranks as the solar system's fifth largest planet. It is the largest of the four terrestrial planets—those composed of rock and metal—and is slightly larger than Venus. While many planets exist, Earth is unique for having liquid water on its surface, a feature that likely provided a vital environment for life to begin approximately 3.8 billion years ago.

The planet's physical characteristics are defined by specific orbital mechanics. Earth orbits the Sun at an average distance of 93 million miles, a distance defined as one astronomical unit (AU). It takes 365.25 days to complete a single orbit. To account for that extra quarter-day in our calendars, we utilize leap years every four years by adding a leap day.

Our perspective of Earth has shifted through history. For centuries, thinkers have viewed it as a planet like any other, following the Copernican revolution. While sea voyages and early telescopes provided evidence of a globe, it wasn't until December 1968, when Apollo 8 astronauts orbited the Moon, that humans directly observed the Earth as a complete orb floating in space.

The planet's environment is also shaped by its orientation. Earth's axis is tilted at 23.4 degrees relative to its orbital plane, a tilt that creates our seasonal cycles. This tilt causes the northern hemisphere to lean toward the Sun during certain parts of the year, resulting in increased solar heating and summer.
