How one Michigan plant produced a heavy bomber every single hour during wartime
In short: Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States transformed its economy into an industrial powerhouse. This video examines the Willow Run facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan, which achieved a record-breaking production rate of B-24 Liberator bombers that remains unmatched in history.
After the United States entered the Second World War in December 1941, the nation rapidly converted civilian factories to military production. Facilities previously dedicated to sewing machines and automobiles began manufacturing tanks, rifles, and aircraft to support the Allied effort.
Air Force Plant 31, known as Willow Run, became the centerpiece of this industrial mobilization. By April 1944, the plant reached its peak capacity, successfully completing one B-24 Liberator heavy bomber every hour. This massive output by a civilian workforce, which included record numbers of women, helped secure victory over the Axis Powers.
