In short: Trimbakeshwar is home to one of twelve auspicious Jyotirlingas, where Shiva is said to have appeared as a pillar of infinite light. Unlike other shrines, this temple features a unique three-faced linga representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Its gradual erosion is believed to symbolize the inevitable decay of human society.

Located in the Nashik District of Maharashtra, the Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple is a site of immense spiritual significance, serving as the source of the Godavari River. The current basalt structure was commissioned by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao, also known as Nanasaheb, following the destruction of the original temple by the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. Legend suggests the construction was prompted by a wager regarding whether the stone surrounding the Jyotirlinga was hollow, a theory proven correct when the stone was opened.

The temple is distinguished by its three-faced linga, which embodies the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. This iconic form is protected by a jeweled crown dating back to the age of the Pandavas, adorned with diamonds and emeralds. Historically, the linga was decorated with the famous Nassak Diamond, which was looted by the British during the Third Anglo-Maratha War. Today, the diamond is held by a private owner in the United States, while the crown remains a focal point for pilgrims who visit to perform rituals such as Narayan Nagbali.

Beyond its architecture, the site is deeply connected to the origin of the Godavari River, often called the Ganga of the South. According to tradition, Sage Gautama performed intense penance on the nearby Brahmagiri Hill to alleviate a regional drought. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva directed the Ganges to flow through the hills, creating the river. Today, the temple remains a hub for Vedic learning and spiritual practice, housing monasteries and samadhis that continue to draw devotees from across India.
