Vernon Lee: The Victorian polymath who turned art appreciation into a physical experience
In short: Known for her haunting supernatural fiction and sharp art criticism, Vernon Lee was a pioneering intellectual who bridged the gap between psychology and aesthetics. She argued that our appreciation of art is not merely intellectual, but a visceral reaction involving unconscious changes in our own posture and breathing patterns.
Born Violet Paget in 1856, the writer known as Vernon Lee spent most of her life in Italy, becoming a central figure in the Aesthetic movement. A prolific essayist and authority on the Italian Renaissance, she moved beyond traditional art history to explore how environments and objects affect the human psyche. Her travel writing, such as Genius Loci, sought to capture the psychological essence of places rather than mere descriptive facts.
Lee’s most significant contribution to aesthetics was her role in bringing the German concept of Einfühlung—or empathy—into English discourse. Working alongside her partner Clementina Anstruther-Thomson, she developed a theory of psychological aesthetics. They proposed that when we view a work of art, we do not simply observe it; we empathize with it. This process triggers memories and associations, causing involuntary physical responses in the spectator, such as shifts in breathing or bodily stance.
Despite her prominence, Lee’s pacifist stance during the First World War led to her being ostracized by many of her contemporaries. Her work, including the anti-militarist text Satan the Waster, caused a rift that sidelined her for decades. However, since the 1990s, feminist scholars have rediscovered her contributions, and critics like Montague Summers have praised her as a master of supernatural fiction, noting that her stories possess a unique, ironic, and imaginative quality that remains distinct in literature.
Today, her legacy is preserved through her extensive correspondence at Somerville College and her personal library in Florence. Whether through her ghost stories like those in Hauntings or her rigorous studies on the relationship between art and the audience, Lee remains a vital figure for understanding how personal response shapes our engagement with the world.
