Why did a global conflict become the deadliest event in human history?
In short: World War II was more than just a series of battles; it was a total war that involved nearly every country on Earth. From the invasion of Poland to the massive strategic errors of the Axis powers, this conflict reshaped the entire geopolitical landscape of the 20th century.
The conflict began on 1 September 1939, when Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland. This triggered declarations of war from the United Kingdom and France. The war was characterized by a 'total war' nature, meaning civilian populations became direct targets of aerial attacks and were heavily involved in the war effort.
Two main coalitions fought this war: the Allies—comprising China, the Soviet Union, the United States, Great Britain, and France—and the Axis powers, consisting of Japan, Italy, and Germany. Unresolved tensions following World War I, alongside Japanese militarism and the emergence of European fascism, fueled the struggle. Major precursors involved Germany's annexation of the Sudetenland and Austria, plus Japan's 1931 Manchurian invasion.
Strategic decisions played a decisive role in the outcome. Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 and Japan's attack on the United States were major strategic errors that brought much of the world against the Axis. The war's end in 1945 saw the occupation of Germany, Austria, Japan, and Korea, and the rise of the United States and the Soviet Union as dominant global powers.
The human cost was unprecedented. Estimates suggest the war caused between 60 and 75 million deaths, with a majority being civilians. Many died due to massacres, starvation, disease, and genocides, including the Holocaust. The war also resulted in the Soviet Union extending its power into eastern Europe and a communist movement eventually gaining power in China.
