A philosopher turned politician who reshaped Israel's intelligence and economic policy
In short: Yuval Steinitz transitioned from a career in academic philosophy to a pivotal role in Israeli governance. As a Knesset member and minister, he applied logical rigor to parliamentary oversight, intelligence reform, and economic strategy, famously identifying a secret Syrian nuclear project years before it was officially acknowledged by intelligence agencies.
Before entering politics, Yuval Steinitz was a prominent academic philosopher. His doctoral thesis at Tel Aviv University explored logical arguments for the existence of God and the role of reasoning in modern science. His book, Invitation to Philosophy, became the best-selling philosophy text in Israeli history. This analytical background informed his later political career, where he gained a reputation for challenging established institutions through proactive parliamentary oversight.
Steinitz's tenure as chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee marked a shift toward aggressive scrutiny of the defense establishment. In 2004, he led an investigation into intelligence failures regarding Iraq's non-existent weapons of mass destruction. Most notably, he utilized his subcommittee to identify a secret Syrian nuclear project in 2004, despite initial skepticism from intelligence services. His persistence eventually led the Mossad to confirm the site, resulting in its destruction by the Israeli Air Force in 2007.
As Minister of Finance starting in 2009, Steinitz navigated the global financial crisis by implementing Israel's first biennial budget, a controversial move that eventually gained wide approval for its efficiency. He also oversaw Israel's accession to the OECD in 2010 and pushed through significant economic reforms, including the Sheshinski Committee recommendations, which raised the government's tax take on natural gas fields to over 60%. His career reflects a rare synthesis of abstract philosophical inquiry and the pragmatic, often confrontational, realities of national security and economic governance.
