Adelina Patti was the world's highest-paid opera star, but her voice remains a mystery.
In short: At her peak, Adelina Patti commanded $5,000 per night in gold, yet the only surviving recording from her early career is a fragile, unplayable cylinder. While she was once hailed as the finest singer who ever lived, her legacy now rests on later, aging recordings and legendary tales of her stubbornness.
Born in Madrid in 1843 to Italian parents, Adelina Patti became a global sensation, performing from 1851 until 1914. Her career was defined by a perfect bel canto technique and a birdlike, flexible soprano voice. By the 1870s, composers like Giuseppe Verdi considered her a stupendous artist, noting her ability to handle both light, lyric roles and more dramatic, weightier parts. She was a shrewd businesswoman who insisted on top billing and massive fees, famously training a parrot to shriek for cash whenever her promoter, Colonel Mapleson, entered the room.
Patti’s professional life was marked by immense wealth and international travel, including successful tours in Russia where she befriended intellectuals like Tchaikovsky. However, her personal life was turbulent. Her first marriage to the Marquess of Caux ended in a bitter divorce that cost her half her fortune. She later married Ernesto Nicolini and finally the Swedish aristocrat Baron Rolf Cederström, who significantly curtailed her social life. Despite these shifts, she managed her finances well, avoiding the poverty that claimed many of her contemporaries, and spent her final years at Craig-y-Nos Castle in Wales.
As her voice aged, Patti became a conservative performer, favoring sentimental, popular tunes over the demanding operatic roles of her youth. Her final U.S. tour in 1903 was a failure, and she eventually retreated to private performances in her own miniature theatre. While she made over 30 disc recordings in 1905 and 1906, these captured her voice well past its prime. Today, she remains a cultural touchstone, referenced in works by Oscar Wilde and Jules Verne, and remembered as a singular figure whose vocal purity once captivated the world's most elite audiences.
