In short: Adriano Celentano is more than an Italian icon; he is a cultural force who brought rock and roll to his home country. Known as Il Molleggiato for his springy dance moves, he evolved from a humble watchmaker into a prolific singer, actor, and director with 150 million records sold worldwide.

Born in 1938 in Milan, Celentano’s early life was defined by his working-class roots at 14 Via Cristoforo Gluck, a location he later immortalized in his music. Before his rise to fame, he worked as a watchmaker, a trade he left behind in 1959 to pursue a career in music. Heavily inspired by Elvis Presley and the American rock and roll scene, he formed a band with Giorgio Gaber and Enzo Jannacci. His breakthrough was swift, aided by record executive Ezio Leoni, who helped him craft early hits like 24.000 baci.

Celentano’s influence extends far beyond the recording studio. In 1962, he founded his own record label, Clan Celentano, which remains active today. His cinematic career is equally vast, spanning 39 films. While he appeared in Federico Fellini’s La dolce vita in 1960, critics often cite his 1968 performance in Pietro Germi’s Serafino as his finest work. During the 1970s and 1980s, his low-budget comedies dominated the Italian box office, cementing his status as a national pillar of entertainment.

His creative output is marked by a unique sense of experimentation. In 1972, he released Prisencolinensinainciusol, a track composed entirely of gibberish designed to mimic the phonetic cadence of English to non-speakers. His cultural footprint is so deep that the Barilla pasta company even named a corkscrew-shaped pasta after him in the 1970s. Decades later, his appeal remains undiminished; a 2012 live concert, his first in 18 years, drew over 9 million viewers, proving that the 'springy one' retains his grip on the Italian public imagination.
