The 1922 team that was so dominant it received a White House invitation
In short: In the early days of college football, Drake University produced a squad so formidable they were voted the nation's number one team. This undefeated powerhouse didn't just dominate their opponents; they captured enough national attention to be invited to the White House for their accomplishments.
The 1922 Drake Bulldogs are widely regarded as the greatest team in the program's history and remain its only undefeated season. Under the leadership of legendary coach Ossie Solem, the Bulldogs capped their historic run with a decisive 48–6 victory over Mississippi State on November 25, 1922. Their dominance was recognized nationally, earning them votes as the top team in the College Football Researchers Association poll.
The program's prestige during this era extended beyond the scoreboard. The team’s success was significant enough to merit an invitation to the White House. Furthermore, the university became a hub for cultural icons; in 1926, baseball legend Babe Ruth even suited up for a scrimmage with the Bulldogs. Despite Ruth's admission that he had never 'indulged in the dirt eating pastime,' he still managed to score a 20-yard touchdown during the mock game.
Drake also set early technological and geographical milestones. They were the first school of their size to install lights, hosting the first night game at Drake Stadium on October 6, 1928, against Simpson College. The program's reach eventually stretched across the Pacific; in 1931, coach Solem organized a trip to Honolulu for an 'Aloha Classic' game against Hawaii—the first time an Iowa school had ever played in the state.
The legacy of Drake football is also defined by individual pioneers. In 1951, Johnny Bright became a First Team All-American and finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting. His career was marked by both immense athletic achievement and the racial tensions of the era, specifically regarding a violent on-field assault during his time at Oklahoma A&M that became a landmark moment in sports history.
