Why François Couperin, the Great, remains the bridge between French and Italian musical styles.
In short: Known as Couperin le Grand, this French composer defined the Baroque era through his mastery of the harpsichord. By blending the linear elegance of French vocal music with the emotional depth of Italian harmony, he created a unique synthesis that even Johann Sebastian Bach studied and admired throughout his life.
Born in Paris in 1668, François Couperin emerged from a prominent musical dynasty. Following the death of his father, Charles, when François was only 10, the wardens of the Church of Saint-Gervais reserved the family's organist position for him. He assumed these duties before turning 18, eventually ascending to become one of the four organists of the royal chapel in 1693. His career flourished under the patronage of the French court, where he served as a harpsichord teacher to the royal children and eventually succeeded Jean-Henri d’Anglebert as court harpsichordist in 1717.
Couperin is best remembered for his extensive contributions to harpsichord literature, publishing four books of suites between 1713 and 1730. These works are characterized by highly ornamented melodies and intricate dialogues between treble and bass. Beyond his keyboard compositions, he was a pioneer in chamber music, notably introducing the Italian trio sonata form to France. His works such as L'Apothéose de Corelli and L'Apothéose de Lully exemplify his goal of a réunion des goûts—a reunion of the distinct French and Italian musical styles of the period.
His influence extended into technical pedagogy with the 1716 publication of L'art de toucher le clavecin, a manual detailing keyboard technique, ornamentation, and touch. Toward the end of his life, his health declined, leading him to pass his professional responsibilities to his cousin Nicolas and his daughter Marguerite-Antoinette. He died in 1733, leaving behind a legacy that includes profound liturgical works like the Leçons de ténèbres. His ability to infuse French style with a unique, mystical quality remains a hallmark of his genius, distinguishing him from his contemporaries and securing his place in history.
