Why the world's most esteemed pianist refuses to play in the United Kingdom
In short: Grigory Sokolov is widely considered one of the greatest living pianists, yet he remains a rare presence in the United States and has boycotted the UK for years. His career is defined by uncompromising artistic standards, a disdain for modern bureaucracy, and a deep, evolving relationship with the piano repertoire.
Born in Leningrad in 1950, Grigory Sokolov began his formal training at age five. By 16, he achieved international fame as the youngest winner of the 1966 International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. Despite this early acclaim, his global career trajectory was unconventional. While he toured the United States during the 1960s and 1970s, geopolitical tensions—specifically the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the subsequent cancellation of cultural agreements—stalled his American presence. During the collapse of the Soviet Union, he ceased international touring entirely, focusing his efforts within Russia.
Sokolov’s current reputation is built on his rigorous, perfectionist approach to performance. He is known for his precise ornamentation and a refusal to finalize concert programs until shortly before he takes the stage. This intensity extends to his recording habits; he famously released no new recordings for two decades between 1995 and 2015. He prefers the depth gained from repeating solo programs over the constraints of concerto performances, which he argues suffer from inadequate rehearsal time and a lack of creative synergy with conductors.
His principled stance on personal and professional matters is well-documented. In 2009, he cancelled a London concert to protest British visa requirements that demanded biometric data, likening the policy to Soviet-era oppression. Similarly, in 2015, he rejected the Cremona Music Award after discovering that music journalist Norman Lebrecht was also a recipient, citing his own standards of decency regarding remarks Lebrecht had previously made about his family. Now a Spanish national, Sokolov continues to tour extensively across Europe, maintaining a singular, uncompromising path that prioritizes artistic integrity over the conventional demands of the music industry.
