A masterpiece of tension composed by a man who couldn't read music
In short: John Carpenter’s 1978 Halloween score is a cornerstone of modern horror, yet it was born from a bizarre paradox. Despite its enduring influence on the synthwave genre, the entire soundtrack was composed in just three days by a director who admitted he could not read or write a single musical note.
John Carpenter’s score for the 1978 film Halloween serves as a masterclass in atmospheric minimalism. Eschewing a traditional symphonic approach, Carpenter relied on a haunting piano melody characterized by a 10/8 or "complex 5/4" time signature. This specific rhythmic choice, combined with the film's surreal aesthetic, was heavily influenced by the works of Dario Argento, specifically Suspiria, as well as William Friedkin’s The Exorcist.
The production of the music was remarkably rapid. Carpenter composed the entire soundtrack in only three days. Most of the musical work was executed by him, though Dan Wyman, a San Jose State University music professor, provided some help. In a nod to his own self-deprecating humor, Carpenter jokingly credited himself as the "Bowling Green Philharmonic Orchestra" at the end of the film's credits.
Despite its technical simplicity—which critic James Berardinelli described as "relatively simple and unsophisticated"—the music became one of the film's most recognizable assets. It transcended the screen to influence the synthwave genre and remain a staple of pop culture. The 2018 Mondo Records LP release finally allowed listeners to hear the music as it was originally intended for theaters and early VHS releases by using mono tracks from the original 35mm stem.
The soundtrack also integrated external musical elements to round out the film's sonic identity. The collection featured a piece by a circle of pals who founded The Coupe De Villes, alongside Blue Öyster Cult's classic rock anthem "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." Together, these elements created a cohesive, chilling atmosphere that defined the slasher genre.
