How a marriage of extremes shaped the sound of Kung Fu Panda
In short: To create a score for a film about a humble panda in a majestic martial arts world, composers needed to balance two opposing musical identities. The result was a deliberate contrast between sweeping, epic orchestral movements and simple, intimate melodies that mirrored the film's core narrative.
The score for the 2008 film Kung Fu Panda was a collaborative effort between Hans Zimmer and his protégé John Powell. While Zimmer was initially the sole composer, Powell was brought in after a test screening to provide a specific musical counterpoint. This partnership allowed the production to navigate the "marriage of extremes" required by the story: the contrast between the intimate journey of the protagonist, Po, and the formal, epic backdrop of the martial arts world.
To achieve this, Zimmer visited China to study traditional culture and music, eventually bringing the China National Symphony Orchestra into the project alongside the London Symphony Orchestra and London Voices. The recording took place at AIR Studios in London. The score is characterized by a "lush musical landscape" that incorporates traditional Chinese instruments, including the erhu, guzheng, pipa, and various Chinese flutes.
This fusion of Western symphonic power with semi-traditional Asian motifs was intended to create a "big, epic" feel without falling into the trap of "cartoon" music. Critics have noted the specific roles each composer played in this balance. Zimmer provided the "huge, epic and beautiful" Dragon Warrior theme, while Powell was responsible for the "very simple, very humble" music associated with Po. While some critics have described the result as "predictable" or "faux-Oriental," others praise the duo's ability to manage "busy" music that focuses on theme and melody to carry the film's humor and emotion through its various training montages and action sequences.
