In short: In music, 'range' isn't a single measurement. While most think of it as the distance between highest and lowest pitches, the reality is a complex web of written notes, actual sounds, and even the physical limits of human hearing.

To understand musical range, one must distinguish between the sounding range—the actual pitches an instrument produces—and the written range found on sheet music. For instance, a piccolo typically sounds an octave higher than its written range. There is also the 'designated range,' which represents the span where a performer maintains comfortable control over timbre, dynamics, and duration.

The mechanics of these limits vary by instrument family. String players frequently utilize the bottom of their range, but the upper limit is often considered 'fuzzy.' Conversely, woodwind and string instruments generally stay within their designated limits. Brass instruments are the outliers; they can play below their designated range, producing notes known as pedal tones. While rare in classical arrangements, 20th-century works frequently call for these pedal tones in the bass trombone.

The extremes of pitch can even transcend human perception. A pipe organ can produce a note as low as C−1 (8 Hz) or, through acoustic combination, as low as C−2 (4 Hz), both of which fall below the threshold of human hearing. Even in modern reproduction, many speakers are limited to a low end of approximately 40–60 Hz, meaning the full potential of certain instruments remains physically unhearable in many listening environments.

Beyond pitch, range encompasses other dimensions: 'duration range' measures the gap between the shortest and longest rhythms, while 'dynamic range' tracks the difference between the quietest and loudest volumes.
