From lettuce fields to rock stardom, the Red Rocker’s life is a wild ride.
In short: Sammy Hagar’s career spans from hard rock pioneer in Montrose to the voice of Van Halen’s multi-platinum era. Beyond the stage, he is a serial entrepreneur who claims he was once contacted by extraterrestrials. His journey is defined by relentless reinvention, high-stakes supergroups, and a refusal to slow down.
Born in 1947 in Salinas, California, Sammy Hagar grew up in labor camps where his family worked in lettuce fields. His childhood was marked by his father’s alcoholism and violence, leading his mother to leave the family when Hagar was ten. He taught himself guitar on a $40 Sears catalog instrument and fronted his first band at 14. By the early 1970s, he had moved to San Francisco and joined the band Montrose, which became a major influence on Eddie Van Halen’s heavy, open-chord guitar style.
Hagar’s solo career gained momentum with hits like 1984’s 'I Can't Drive 55', but he is perhaps best known for his tenure as the lead vocalist of Van Halen from 1985 to 1996 and again from 2003 to 2005. His time with the band produced four consecutive number-one albums, though internal tensions—exacerbated by management changes and personal conflicts—eventually led to his departure. Hagar has remained prolific, forming various supergroups including Chickenfoot, Sammy Hagar and the Circle, and the trio Los Tres Gusanos.
Beyond music, Hagar is a dedicated entrepreneur with four spirits brands and 13 restaurants. His life has also been punctuated by the surreal; in 1970, he claimed to have been contacted by extraterrestrial creatures who tapped into his mind via a wireless connection. This experience, which he says led him to a psychic who predicted his future fame, remains a bizarre footnote in a career defined by commercial success, multiple Billboard chart-toppers, and a recent transition toward residency-style performances over traditional touring.
