How an American musician became the voice of Brazil's most famous heavy metal band
In short: Derrick Green, a Cleveland native, moved to Brazil in 1997 to front the legendary metal band Sepultura. Replacing a founder is a notoriously difficult task in music, yet Green navigated two decades of shifting lineups, evolving concepts, and commercial challenges to define a new era for the iconic group.
Born in 1971, Derrick Green grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, before his musical journey led him through the New York hardcore scene. After playing in bands like Outface and Alpha Jerk, his trajectory shifted in 1997 when he was recruited to audition for Sepultura. The band had been searching for a new vocalist following the departure of Max Cavalera, and Green’s audition in São Paulo secured him the role. His debut album with the group, Against, was released in 1998, marking the beginning of a long, often difficult transition period as fans adjusted to the new lineup.
Green’s tenure with Sepultura is defined by his creative influence on the band's conceptual direction. He was instrumental in shaping albums like 2006's Dante XXI, based on Dante's The Divine Comedy, and 2009's A-Lex, inspired by Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange. Beyond his vocal work, Green has contributed to the band's visual identity, co-editing a documentary of the band's career and collaborating on music video concepts. His commitment to the band even extended to moving to São Paulo to immerse himself in the group's environment during the writing of their 2001 album, Nation.
Outside of Sepultura, Green has maintained a diverse artistic life. He has participated in side projects like Musica Diablo and Maximum Hedrum, and he is an avid photographer and writer. His personal philosophy, which he describes as a deep, religious-like connection to the planet and nature, informs his lifestyle as a long-term vegan. Despite the challenges of maintaining a legacy band's vitality through personnel changes and shifting industry landscapes, Green has remained a consistent, focused presence in heavy metal, bridging his American roots with his long-term life in Brazil and Los Angeles.
