In short: Before she became a rock icon, Sheryl Crow spent her days teaching music to children in Missouri. A bold move to Los Angeles led to a stint as a backup singer for Michael Jackson, eventually launching a career defined by Grammy-winning hits and a relentless, genre-defying creative spirit.

Born in 1962 in Kennett, Missouri, Sheryl Crow grew up in a household steeped in music, with parents who performed in jazz bands. Her own musical journey began early; she was playing piano by ear at age five and composing her own songs by thirteen. After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1984 with a degree in music education, she initially pursued a career teaching children with special needs. However, her ambition to make it big in the industry led her to relocate to Los Angeles in 1986.

Crow’s breakthrough came through persistence. She secured an audition for Michael Jackson’s Bad World Tour and spent two years traveling as a backup singer. During this period, she worked with legendary acts including Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, and Don Henley, the latter of whom famously encouraged her to strike out as a solo artist. Her path to stardom was not linear; an initial attempt at a debut album in 1992 was shelved because she felt the production was too slick and over-processed.

The turning point arrived through the Tuesday Night Music Club, a collective of songwriters who gathered in a warehouse to craft songs. This collaboration birthed her 1993 debut album, which eventually exploded in popularity thanks to the hit single 'All I Wanna Do.' Crow’s career has since spanned decades, marked by nine Grammy Awards and a 2023 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite facing personal challenges, including a breast cancer diagnosis in 2006, she has remained a prolific artist, evolving from her rock roots to collaborative projects and, most recently, her 2024 album, Evolution.
