How Shinee became the Princes of K-pop through experimental sound and complex choreography
In short: Formed in 2008, Shinee redefined the boy band archetype by blending contemporary R&B with funk, hip hop, and EDM. Known for their rigorous live vocals and synchronized dance routines, they became a cultural force in South Korea and Japan, maintaining their status as trendsetters for over fifteen years.
Launched by SM Entertainment in May 2008, Shinee debuted with the EP Replay, which immediately sparked a fashion phenomenon known as the Shinee Trend. The group, originally consisting of five members—Onew, Key, Minho, Taemin, and the late Jonghyun—was designed to be a contemporary R&B act that pushed boundaries in music, dance, and style. Their early success was cemented by hits like 'Ring Ding Dong' and 'Lucifer', the latter earning critical acclaim for its intricate choreography.
Shinee’s influence extended rapidly beyond South Korea. In 2011, they signed with EMI Music Japan, becoming the first Asian artists to perform at London's Abbey Road Studios. Their Japanese debut single, 'Replay', set a record for the highest sales for a South Korean group debut at the time, as recorded by Oricon. Throughout their career, they have consistently topped charts, with albums like Sherlock (2012) and Don't Call Me (2021) achieving significant commercial success and industry certifications.
The group’s artistic evolution is marked by a willingness to experiment with diverse genres, from acid electro funk in 'Dream Girl' to the retro-inspired sounds of 1 of 1. Even after the tragic loss of Jonghyun in 2017, the remaining members continued to perform and release music, including the trilogy The Story of Light. Their resilience and commitment to their craft have kept them at the forefront of the industry, with their cumulative Japanese tour attendance reaching over 1.12 million by 2016.
