In short: Born in Bohemia, Teresa Stolz rose to become the quintessential dramatic soprano for Giuseppe Verdi. She defined the title role of Aida in Italy and starred in the premiere of his Requiem. Beyond the stage, her life was marked by complex personal ties to Verdi and the conductor Luigi Ricci.

Born Tereza Stolzová in 1834, the singer emerged from a musical family in Kostelec nad Labem. Her early training was turbulent; she was expelled from the Prague Conservatory in 1851 before finding stability under Luigi Ricci in Trieste. Ricci, who would later become her brother-in-law, played a pivotal role in her development, as did her subsequent studies with Francesco Lamperti in Milan. Her professional journey began in Tbilisi in 1857, eventually leading her to the major stages of Europe, including La Scala, where she became a fixture.

Stolz is best remembered as the primary interpreter of Verdi’s vision. Her partnership with the composer was profound; she performed the title role in the Italian premiere of Aida in 1872, a production Verdi considered the true debut of the work due to his heavy involvement. She also sang the soprano part in the premiere of his Requiem in 1874. Critics of the era lauded her as the 'Verdian dramatic soprano par excellence,' noting her unique combination of power, passion, and dignified control.

Her personal life was as intertwined with the musical elite as her career. She was once engaged to the conductor Angelo Mariani, a relationship that ended in 1871. Following the death of Verdi’s wife, Giuseppina Strepponi, in 1897, Stolz became the composer's companion. She died in Milan in 1902, just one year after Verdi. Her legacy was preserved in part by her nephew, Luigi Ricci-Stolz, who inherited her estate and carried her name forward, cementing her place in the history of 19th-century opera.
