How Terry Riley’s minimalist experiments reshaped the sound of modern rock and electronic music.
In short: Terry Riley is a pioneer of minimalism whose innovative use of tape loops and repetitive modal structures broke classical conventions. From his landmark 1964 composition In C to his electronic masterpiece A Rainbow in Curved Air, Riley’s work has profoundly influenced artists ranging from The Who to The Velvet Underground.
Born in 1935, Terry Riley emerged from the experimental San Francisco scene of the 1950s and 60s. His early work was defined by a fascination with tape delay systems, which he famously developed into a 'time-lag accumulator' while in Paris in 1963. This technique allowed him to manipulate sound in real-time, creating complex, layered textures that became a hallmark of his electronic compositions.
His 1964 work In C remains a cornerstone of minimalist music. It consists of 53 musical modules in the key of C, played by any number of instruments. Performers follow loose guidelines, allowing the patterns to interlock and shift over time. This departure from rigid structure challenged traditional notions of classical composition, emphasizing improvisation and the beauty of repetition over linear progression.
Riley’s influence extends far beyond the concert hall. His 1969 album A Rainbow in Curved Air directly inspired Pete Townshend of The Who, who paid tribute to the composer in the song 'Baba O'Riley.' Additionally, his collaborations with figures like La Monte Young and his deep study of Indian classical music under Pandit Pran Nath infused his work with modal depth and just intonation, further expanding the possibilities of contemporary sound.
Throughout his long career, Riley has maintained a prolific output, composing 13 string quartets for the Kronos Quartet and continuing to perform as both a pianist and raga vocalist. Whether through his early tape experiments or his later orchestral commissions, Riley’s work continues to bridge the gap between rigorous academic composition and the raw, improvisational spirit of jazz and rock.
