How a traditional instrument student became one of the four divas of Vietnam
In short: Born into a musical family in Hanoi, Thanh Lam transitioned from traditional Vietnamese instruments to vocal performance in 1985. Her career exploded in 1991, marking the start of a journey that would see her become a defining voice in Vietnamese music, collaborating with international jazz musicians and producing dozens of albums.
Born on June 19, 1969, to composer Thuận Yến and traditional artist Thanh Hương, Thanh Lam was immersed in music from childhood. Her formal training began at nine at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music, where she initially mastered the đàn tỳ bà. A pivotal shift occurred in 1985 when she pivoted to vocal training, a move that fundamentally reshaped her trajectory. By 1991, she had cemented her status as a powerhouse, winning the National Professional Solo Singer contest with a perfect score from all six judges.
Her artistic evolution was deeply intertwined with her personal and professional partnerships. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she performed internationally across Europe and Asia, gaining early recognition at festivals in Berlin and Havana. Her collaboration with composer Quốc Trung, whom she married in 1994, became a cornerstone of her sound. Together, they pushed boundaries, blending traditional Vietnamese elements with modern arrangements, as seen in their work with the Phuong Dong band and projects like the 2006 and 2007 Vong Nguyet shows at the Roskilde Festival.
Beyond her technical prowess, Lam has remained a consistent force in the industry, producing over thirty albums and earning multiple Green Wave Awards between 1997 and 2001. Her influence extends to the next generation; her children have also achieved significant success, with her son Nguyễn Đăng Quang recognized as a gifted pianist and one of Vietnam's ten young faces in 2014. Today, she is widely celebrated as one of the four divas of Vietnam, a testament to her enduring impact on the nation's cultural landscape.
