Tina Fey's The Four Seasons brings Alan Alda's 1981 film back, with Alda aboard
In 1981 Alan Alda wrote, directed and starred in a film about married friends whose holidays together expose cracks in their lives. Over four decades later Tina Fey remade it for Netflix with Steve Carell, Colman Domingo and Will Forte, and cast Alda himself as a guest.
The Four Seasons was created by Tina Fey, Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, and like its source it follows a circle of couples through the trips they take together across a year. The trouble starts when one husband, Nick Pagano, a hedge fund manager played by Carell, announces he is leaving his wife Anne, played by Kerri Kenney-Silver. He soon begins dating Ginny, a much younger dental hygienist, who later has his son.
The other couples absorb the shock in their own ways. Fey plays Kate, a take-charge homemaker, married to Forte's Jack, a nervous schoolteacher. Domingo is Danny, a dry-witted architect who dated Kate in college before coming out, and who is married to Claude, an exuberant Italian homemaker played by Marco Calvani. Alda turns up as Don, Anne's father, a neat nod to his having played Jack Burroughs in the original.
The production kept strong ties to the film. Little Stranger Inc. made it, and the producers include Alda and Marissa Bregman, daughter of Martin Bregman, who produced the 1981 movie. Carell signed on in April 2024 and Domingo in June 2024; shooting ran through the second half of that year in New York state, with some season one scenes filmed in Puerto Rico.
Netflix released it on May 1, 2025 and renewed it that same month. A second season arrived on May 28, 2026, with Carell reduced to a guest and new faces including Steven Pasquale as a friend of Jack's drawn to Anne and David Tennant as Gianpiero, a neighbour in Italy. In June 2026 it was renewed again, for a third season.
