In short: Before global K-pop dominance, the Wonder Girls became the first South Korean act to crack the Billboard Hot 100. Known as the Retro Queens, they transformed from a dance-pop sensation into an acclaimed four-piece band, leaving a legacy of viral hits that defined an era of Korean music history.

Formed by JYP Entertainment and introduced via a 2006 reality show, the Wonder Girls debuted in early 2007 with the single Irony. The group quickly captured the public imagination with their 1960s-to-80s aesthetic. Their 2007 hit Tell Me sparked the Tell Me Virus, a widespread phenomenon where fans across the country imitated the song's simple choreography. By 2008, the group solidified their status with the smash hit Nobody, which earned them the prestigious Artist of the Year award at the 18th Seoul Music Awards.

The group's international ambitions led to a historic 2009 entry onto the Billboard Hot 100, where Nobody peaked at number 76. This achievement marked a breakthrough for Korean artists in the American market. Despite constant lineup shifts—including the departure of original members like Hyuna and Sunmi, and the addition of Yubin and Hyerim—the group maintained a consistent creative output. They navigated complex challenges, including scrapped English-language albums and mandatory hiatuses, while continuing to evolve their sound.

In 2015, the group reinvented themselves for their final chapter. Returning as a four-piece band, they played their own instruments on the critically acclaimed album Reboot. This shift toward a self-produced, 1980s-inspired rock sound culminated in their 2016 chart-topping single Why So Lonely. When the group officially disbanded in 2017, they left behind a decade of influence. Billboard later recognized them as one of the top three K-pop girl groups of the previous ten years, cementing their role in bringing Korean pop culture to a global audience.
