The ABC Islands: A Harsh Landscape for Resilient Caribbean Wildlife
In short: The ABC islands are defined by dry terrain and powerful winds, creating a demanding environment that filters for the most resilient species. Yet, within this rugged landscape, distinct wildlife thrives in hidden interiors—from expressive monkeys with white beards to some of the world's largest pink flamingos.
The ABC islands—Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao—present a challenging ecological profile characterized by aridity and strong winds. Despite these harsh conditions, they serve as vital habitats for specialized fauna. While many travelers focus on the coastline, the true biodiversity is often tucked away in humid heartlands, featuring volcanic hills, steep valleys, and crater lakes that provide sanctuary from the elements.
One of the region's most notable residents is the mona monkey of Grenada. Originally native to West Africa, these monkeys arrived in the 18th century via colonial ships, potentially as pets or by accident. They are unique for their expressive blue-grey faces, fluffy white beards, and wide eyes that give them a perpetually surprised appearance. In Grenada's Grand Etang National Park—a forest spanning over 3,000 acres—they inhabit the canopy but are known to descend for snacks like bananas.
In contrast to the forested highlands of Grenada, Bonaire offers a different spectacle in its salt ponds, or salinas. Within Washington Slagbaai National Park, which covers one-fifth of the island's 111 square miles, flamingos gather in large groups. These birds are among the largest and brightest in the world, often seen dipping their webbed feet into shallow seawater at sites like the Gotomeer lagoon.
The survival of these species is increasingly tied to human intervention. For decades, local conservationists have worked to establish protected areas and enforce anti-poaching policies across the Caribbean. These efforts ensure that both the ancient iguanas of the Bahamas and the sociable monkeys of Grenada can persist in their natural environments.
