How a 1973 Wimbledon Boycott Transformed Men's Professional Tennis Forever
In short: When Yugoslavia's top player was suspended, the newly formed Association of Tennis Professionals took a radical stand. By boycotting the 1973 Wimbledon Championships, they asserted player power against established federations. This pivotal moment sparked a decades-long evolution, shifting control from tournament directors to the athletes who define the sport.
The Association of Tennis Professionals emerged in 1972, founded by Donald Dell, Jack Kramer, and Cliff Drysdale to safeguard the interests of professional men's tennis players. Almost immediately, the organization faced a crisis of authority. In 1973, when the International Lawn Tennis Federation supported the suspension of Nikola Pilić, the ATP responded with a historic boycott of Wimbledon. Eighty-one top players, including reigning champion Stan Smith, refused to compete, signaling the end of an era where federations held absolute control over professional careers.
For years, the men's circuit was managed by the Men's International Professional Tennis Council, a body dominated by tournament directors and the International Tennis Federation. Players grew increasingly frustrated with their limited influence and the sport's marketing. This tension reached a breaking point in 1988 during a famous 'Parking Lot Press Conference,' where CEO Hamilton Jordan announced the players' withdrawal from the council. This mutiny paved the way for the creation of the modern ATP Tour in 1990.
Today, the ATP governs the professional circuit, managing the ATP Tour and the Challenger Tour. The structure is built on a tiered system of Masters 1000, 500, and 250 events, with ranking points determining qualification for the season-ending ATP Finals. Governance is shared between tournament and player representatives, with the ATP Player Advisory Council providing input to the Board of Directors. While Grand Slam tournaments remain outside its direct control, the ATP’s influence on the sport's global calendar and ranking standards remains absolute.
