In short: Once roaming from the Arabian Peninsula to India, the Asiatic cheetah is now critically endangered and confined to Iran. With fewer than 50 individuals remaining in fragmented subpopulations, these elusive cats face constant threats from poaching, road accidents, and habitat loss, marking a tragic decline for an ancient subspecies.

The Asiatic cheetah, a distinct subspecies that diverged from African populations between 32,000 and 67,000 years ago, was once widespread across the Near East and South Asia. By the 20th century, however, the species was extirpated from most of its historical range, including India, where they were famously used by royalty for hunting. Today, Iran serves as the final refuge for this autochthonous population, which survives in arid, open landscapes across the central plateau.

Conservation efforts are severely hampered by the fragmentation of their habitat. The cats are forced to navigate a landscape crisscrossed by transit roads, which have become death traps; between 2001 and 2014, at least 11 cheetahs were killed in traffic accidents. Furthermore, mining projects and the presence of livestock herders—whose large dogs have been known to kill cheetahs—pose ongoing risks. Between 1987 and 2018, human-related activities, including poaching and conflict with herders, resulted in the deaths of 56 cheetahs in Iran.

Despite these pressures, the species shows signs of resilience. Recent monitoring has recorded new litters and adults in provinces like North and South Khorasan. Conservation projects, such as the 2001 initiative launched by the Iranian Department of Environment, continue to work toward protecting the remaining individuals. However, the species remains critically endangered, with its future tied to the success of habitat connectivity and the mitigation of human-wildlife conflict in an increasingly developed landscape.
