The transition from rescue to wilderness for orphaned chimpanzees
In short: Watch these orphaned chimpanzees navigate their first steps into the wild. This footage captures a critical developmental milestone for a large troop of rescues learning to survive beyond the safety of human care.
Jenny and Jim Desmond manage a sanctuary in Liberia housing over twenty orphaned baby chimpanzees. Because their current home is becoming too small for the growing troop, the team is constructing a forest sanctuary to provide a permanent wild habitat.
Before moving into the forest, the infants must attend a "baby chimp school." This period of training is essential for teaching the animals the specific survival skills required to live independently in the wild.
