The blue eared pheasant is a high-altitude specialist thriving in China's mountain forests.
In short: Standing nearly a meter tall, the blue eared pheasant is a striking resident of China's alpine meadows. Despite its rare appearance and specialized habitat, this bird remains classified as of least concern. Its unique biology, from crimson legs to distinctive white ear coverts, reveals a master of high-altitude survival.
The blue eared pheasant, known scientifically as Crossoptilon auritum, is a large bird endemic to the mountain forests of central China. It is a high-altitude specialist, typically found inhabiting juniper scrub within alpine meadows at elevations ranging from 2700 to 4400 meters. Its geographical range is strategically positioned between its close relatives: it lives to the northeast of the white eared pheasant and to the southwest of the brown eared pheasant.
Physically, the species is defined by its dark blue-grey plumage, which is contrasted by a velvet black crown and vibrant red facial wattles. Perhaps its most notable features are the long white ear coverts located behind the eyes and a curved, loose tail composed of 24 elongated feathers. While both sexes share similar coloring, males are slightly larger, weighing between 1700 and 2110 grams compared to the 1450 to 1880 grams of females. Males also possess short spurs on their legs, a feature absent in females.
The bird's diet is primarily herbivorous, with about 80 percent consisting of berries and various vegetable matter. The remaining 20 percent of its nutritional intake comes from insects, with a particular preference for beetles. Measuring approximately 96 centimeters in length, including a tail that can reach up to 56 centimeters, the pheasant is a significant presence in its ecosystem. Although it is often considered a rare sighting, current evaluations classify the species as being of least concern, highlighting its resilience in its rugged, mountainous home.
