In short: While zoos are often viewed as mere entertainment, they function as vital modern-day arks for endangered species. This program looks past the fences to reveal the undisturbed behaviors and complex social interactions that remain hidden from the public eye.

The series explores 12 of Western Germany's most popular zoos, moving beyond the typical visitor experience to document the private lives of permanent residents. It highlights how these institutions serve a dual purpose: providing education while actively preserving biodiversity through breeding programs and habitat replication.

By observing animals in their natural social states, the program aims to demonstrate the importance of conservation efforts for some of the planet's most endangered species.
