In short: Rising 8,051 metres in the Karakoram range, Broad Peak earns its name from a summit stretching over 1.5 kilometres in length. While it stands just eight kilometres from the legendary K2, this mountain has carved its own history through daring winter ascents, solo speed records, and tragic, high-altitude challenges.

Located on the border of Pakistan and China, Broad Peak is one of the world's fourteen eight-thousanders. Its English name, bestowed by British explorer Martin Conway in 1892, reflects the mountain's unusually elongated summit, which spans nearly a mile. The massif includes several distinct peaks, such as the Rocky Summit at 8,028 metres and Broad Peak Central at 8,011 metres, alongside the main summit.

The mountain's climbing history is marked by significant milestones. The first ascent occurred in June 1957, when an Austrian team led by Marcus Schmuck reached the top without supplemental oxygen or high-altitude porters. Decades later, in 1984, Krzysztof Wielicki completed the first one-day solo ascent of an 8,000-metre peak here, finishing in 21.5 hours. Winter climbing also pushed boundaries; in March 2013, a Polish expedition achieved the first winter summit, though the descent resulted in the loss of two climbers.

Despite these achievements, the mountain remains perilous. The summer of 2013 saw three Iranian climbers perish after establishing a new route, and the mountain has been the site of multiple fatal incidents. In July 2026, an avalanche between Camp 2 and Camp 3 claimed the lives of ten climbers, including notable figures like Nirmal Purja, marking the deadliest single event in the mountain's recorded history. These events underscore the extreme risks inherent in navigating the Karakoram's high-altitude terrain.

Modern exploration continues to evolve, ranging from Shehroze Kashif becoming the youngest person to summit the peak at age 17 in 2019, to Antoine Girard’s 2016 feat of paragliding above the 8,000-metre summit. Whether through traditional alpine-style ascents or record-breaking speed attempts, Broad Peak remains a focal point for mountaineers testing the limits of human endurance in the thin air of the high Karakoram.
