From Disney wizard to director, the evolving career of actor David Henrie
In short: David Henrie rose to fame as Justin Russo on the Disney Channel, but his career spans far beyond the wizarding world. From early sitcom roles to directing his own films and hosting television series, Henrie has navigated a diverse path in Hollywood while balancing his personal life and faith.
Born in 1989 in Mission Viejo, California, David Henrie began his acting career early, landing a regular role on the Fox sitcom The Pitts at age 13. His breakthrough arrived in 2007 when he was cast as Justin Russo in the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place. He portrayed the character throughout the series' run and contributed as a writer for two episodes. Following his Disney tenure, Henrie expanded his portfolio into film, appearing in projects such as Grown Ups 2, Little Boy, and the biographical drama Walt Before Mickey.
Henrie’s creative ambitions extended behind the camera. By 2014, he had directed two short films, and in 2018, he wrote, directed, and starred in the coming-of-age feature This Is the Year. His professional life has also included hosting duties, such as the 2026 EWTN series Seeking Beauty. Throughout his career, Henrie has maintained a public commitment to his Catholic faith, appearing on the prayer app Hallow and participating in religious media projects.
His personal life has seen significant milestones, including his 2017 marriage to Maria Cahill. The couple has five children, though they faced the loss of a stillborn daughter in 2023. Henrie has also navigated public challenges, most notably a 2018 arrest at Los Angeles International Airport for carrying a loaded firearm. He later pled no contest to one charge, receiving two years of probation, and issued a public apology, characterizing the incident as an unintentional mistake involving a legally purchased weapon.
